Brain DRAINERS!

We’re talking optimum nutrition for the MIND folks!

One of the MAIN ROLES of vitamins and minerals for brain function involves the conversion of glucose into energy, amino acids into neurotransmitters, simple essential fats into more complex fats.

SO let’s talk about SEVEN BRAIN DRAINERS

  1. Oxidants

Sources could be fried food, smoking or pollution.

  2. Alcohol

Alcohol affects your memory by dissolving fatty acids within brain cells, replacing brain beneficial omega-3 DHA with poor substitute DPA. Alcohol also blocks the conversion of fats into DHA and prostaglandins.

  3. Sugar

Sugar is the worst fuel for the brain for a few reasons.

    • Contributes to dysglycemia: This is an instability in blood sugar which are characterized by strong, sudden cravings for sweets, starches, coffee or alcohol or nervous/anxious feelings relieved by eating.

    • Uses up B vitamins: Sugar uses up your body stores of vitamins and minerals & provides next to none.

    • There is CONCLUSIVE evidence that high consumption of sugar is linked to poor mental health

  4. Stimulants

Stimulants like caffeine when over-consumed, are linked to a variety of issues, some are BRAIN DRAINING, like the depletion of B vitamins and vitamin C, lack of mineral absorption, particularly calcium, magnesium and iron.

  5. Stress

Cortisol is responsible for memory loss in cases of stress.

  6. Toxic Minerals

There are six minerals considered non-essential toxic minerals. Theses are aluminum, cadmium, silver, gold and lead. Individually they all have their own effects.

Let’s look at aluminum! This mineral is used widely in manufacturing a variety of toiletries and food products. There is powerful evidence of aluminum toxicity and its relation to brain function impairments. Recommendations for avoiding aluminum, are avoiding aluminum cooking utensils, and products containing aluminum like antacids, antiperspirant (unless its labelled aluminum-free), and some processed cheeses.

  7. Allergy Provoking Foods

Allergies affect not only the central nervous system and brain, but usually the whole body in various ways. Digestive problems are actually a common underlying contributing factor to the development of allergies!
