5 Tips for Better Digestion
Hello friends!
Healthy digestion is essential for proper absorption and assimilation of food.
You can have the best diet in the world, but if it is not being digested properly, you won’t be absorbing all of those amazing nutrients for cellular support!
I have listed my 5 FAVOURITE tips for BETTER DIGESTION!
SLOW DOWN!
Take your time and chew your food thoroughly. This is the first step of digestion, it is a mechanical process that can greatly impact digestion by preparing food for the chemical digestion process that happens in the stomach.
SKIP THE LIQUIDS WITH MEALS
Consuming fluids with meals interferes with the digestive process as it will dilute gastric juices required for efficient digestion. Ice cold water especially will shut down the digestive process, so if you’re needing it, aim for small sips of room temperature water instead!
STRESS MANAGEMENT
Stress PARALYZES digestion. Think about it. When we become stressed, our body diverts energy AWAY from the PARASYMPATHETIC nervous system (rest and DIGEST), and TOWARDS the SYMPATHETIC nervous system (fight or flight). This could be something as simple as eating on the move or while in a hurry or in a rush. If you usually watch television while you eat, anything action packed can also elicit this type of nervous system response. So keep meal time peaceful! Try to eat a few meals outside (we all know how CALMING being outside can be!).
INCORPORATE FERMENTED FOODS
Fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, organic yogurt, and kefir pack a PROBIOTIC PUNCH! Probiotics are healthy bacteria that promote a healthy INTESTINAL environment. This is important because as bad bacteria start to thrive and take over, parasites and toxins may accumulate, contributing to poor intestinal health.
SKIP THE PROCESSED AND REFINED FOODS
Eat well! Nourish your body with good quality, natural foods. These foods are packed with vitamins and minerals and usually are a great source of fiber to boot! Processed foods like white bread, white pasta, baked goods, processed meats and cheeses etc. provide not only empty calories as they are void of nutrients, they force the body to pull from reserves and contribute to digestive issues.
